A "Fantázia géniusza" – beszélgetés Daniele Liveranival

Liverani3.jpg
A "Legacy”-re én is hihetetlenül büszke vagyok. Az első Twinspirits albumon, a "The Music That Will Heal The World"-ön a dán Sören Adamsen énekelt, de ő ezután kilépett, így meghallgatásokat tartottunk, hogy megtaláljuk a Twinspiritshez illő frontembert. S amint látod, újra foglalkozom gitárorientált muzsikával is.

DGM, Astra, Empyrios, Raintime, Sinestesia, Secret Sphere, Vision Divine, Solid Vision, Odd Dimension, Mind Key, etc.). Bőven van felétek kimagasló tehetségű gitáros is (pl. Giacomo Castellano, Marco Sfogli, Brian Maillard, Roberto Priori, stb.).

ENGLISH VERSION

Nowadays it does not seem to be a particularly exciting event in the world of music if a guitarist releases an instrumental album. Why do you still consider it important and worthwhile to make an instrumental album, and make it available in a CD format (and not only on iTunes or some other online file share service)?

Well, I always intended the music as something that comes spontaneously from my creativity without having much influnce from aspects like marketing and commercial issues. I do my music and I love guitar, so I felt the need of making some guitar oriented music and that's what I did. I was lucky enough to find a great label like the Italian SG Records that showed interest in releasing the album, and so it got released on CD and digital format, and I'm very happy about that. I definitely think that this is an exciting event for me, and this is what really matters I'd say. Also I'm old school you know, and I love the real thing which I can put into my player and hold in in my hands, so yes, I'm still a fan of real CDs and vinyls, and that's another reason that lead me to searching for a real release opportunity.

Which one is your main instrument, guitar or keys?

I started with piano when I was a child, then approached the guitar at 16, and then drums and bass as well later on in my musical path. It is difficult to say which would be my main instrument. Probably the guitar is the one that took me into the heavy metal world after a lot of classical training I had during the piano days. So probably the guitar would be my main instrument in terms of the heavy style, but I feel very confortable and at home also with keyboards I have to say, and I often use the piano to compose,as well. So it's very hard to pick just one.

Your new album (Fantasia) was conceived in the same vein as your last one (Eleven Mysteries), that is, it was more focused on melody and catchy songs, while “Daily Trauma” – at least in my opinion – was more technical, and more difficult to relate to? How do you see it?

"Daily Trauma" was written back in 1997 and was released only later in 2004, and since 1997 to 2011, of course, my experience as a writer has been growing in the process of passing throung a whole bunch of albums that I wrote in all the different bands and projects I've been involved. So I would say that when I got back making guitar albums in 2011 I probably had a more experienced training in terms of songwriting, expecially songwriting applied to bands and singed projects (like Twinspirits, Genius) and that helped me to write music where the guitar was more like a singer then an instrument that makes solos or shred passages. Beside that I do think that melody is very important in all styles of music, it's what really can give a trade mark to your style and songs, and progressively, album by album I focused more on this aspect. And, of course, from "Daily Trauma" to "Eleven Mysteries" and now "Fantasia" a lot of time passed and I think it can be heard in the songwriting as well as in the production choices that I've made for these new albums.

It feels like quite a bit of injustice to me that I often find your excellent musical trilogy “Genius” among the discount CDs in many music stores. It was not really celebrated by the critiques either. I actually think that due to the incredible amount of work you invested, the great musicians who collaborated, and the high quality of the result (especially in the case of the third CD) it should have been much more successful. What do you think happened?

Thanks a lot for your positive feedback about my trilogy opera. You know, the commercial thing is not under my control and it can be rather unpredictable. It can be influenced by so many aspects, and I really can't answer to your question in terms why it hasn't been more succesfull. Musically I'm very happy with the result of those 3 albums and that's what really makes me feel good. I did a huge amount of work on that trilogy, but that work was basically focused to the artistic result, and that's the main point for me, and to this day I can say that I'm still very satistified with what came out on those 3 epsiodes. Also I think that those albums are still there for listeners and I constantly get new messages from friends and fans who discover it nowadays, so the nice thing of releasing music is that it's forever, it's there and can be discovered at any time also after a long time following the release date.

Why are you not working with the guys in Empty Tremor anymore?

I decided to leave the band back in 2006 to concentrate into my solo career and other projects. I really felt that I needed to concetrate my efforts on new projects and ideas that I had in mind, and I decided to leave and do what I was musically inspired to do at that moment.

Are you not afraid that you perhaps fragment your creativity by working with so many bands and projects, like Genius, Khymera, Cosmics, Twinspirits, just to mention a few? Where do you find all this inspiration?

Well, all the projects you mentioned are very different from each other basically and that's a point that kept me running in all those different situations. Genius is a rock opera, Khymera is more like and AOR rock oriented project, Cosmics is more like an experimental instrumental musical journey, Twinspirits is more like a real line up with songs that I could performe live for a long period of time to come. So, basically the context is very different, and for that reason I had the chance to gather inspiration in different ways for each of the projects, without a real fragmentation of ideas of styles/types of aprroach.

Among all the projects you worked on, my absolute favourite is Twinspirits. The album “Legacy” was among the first few albums on our 2011 TOP 15 list! Where did you manage to find such a great singer as Göran Nystrom? Can we expect a new album? And if yes, when?

I'm very proud of that album, too. I think "Legacy" ended up being a very lucky and mature album, expecially the suite "The Endless Sleep", which I have to say I consider probably one of my favourte compositions so far. Göran is an amazing singer! I released the first Twinspirits album "The Music That Will Heal The World" with Sören Adamsen from Denmark on vocals, but after that release he left, so I did auditions at a certain point to find the right match for Twinspirits' upcoming albums. At the time Göran was singing with a band, Dimension34, and his great and deep tone caught my ear when I heard some of their tunes. He did some vocal tests on some of the new material and sounded amazing, so he joined the band and did an awesome job with the following albums: "The Forbidden City" and "Legacy". There are no new albums planned at the moment with Twinspirits though, I'm focusing on other project right now, like a new opera that I'm writing which will be keeping me busy for a long time I guess, and as you can see I'm back to guitar oriented music.

In the past 10-15 years or so the music scene has really intensified in Italy, there is a growing number of bands that are internationally known, and what is more important, there are a lot of really good bands (DGM, Astra, Empyrios, Raintime, Sinestesia, Secret Sphere, Vision Divine, Solid Vision, Odd Dimension, Mind Key, etc.) There are also some exceptional guitar players (Giacomo Castellano, Marco Sfogli, Brian Maillard, Roberto Priori, and a few others come to mind). What happened there? What caused this surge of quality acts in the genre?

I think Italy has always had good talents in music in all ages, and in heavy metal this is true, as well. Probably what happened is that all these musicians and bands finally got the right opportunities to be heard and to release and promote their music internationally, and that provided them with the exposure and success that they truly deserved. In the last 10-15 years many labels here in Italy showed up and did a great job, and that made the difference, I believe.

Do you keep any contact with others in the music scene, do you follow each others’ work? How curious are you when a new CD (for instance, a DGM album) comes out?

I, of course, always listen to all stuff from other Italian bands, and I'm always very curious to hear what they do because they deliver great and quality stuff. I'm in touch with most of them as well, and I follow their musical path with great interest.

Daniele, thank you very much!
